The New York Times now requires about 1/10 of people clicking a [gift link like this one](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/19/climate/the-weather-is-getting-wilder-and-some-see-a-dire-signal-in-the-data.html?unlocked_article_code=1.UVA.jyft.SF8T-TywhoSS) to register in order to access the article. You can either:

    * Register — you don’t need to pay — but you do need to give up an email address
    * Open the [gift link](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/19/climate/the-weather-is-getting-wilder-and-some-see-a-dire-signal-in-the-data.html?unlocked_article_code=1.UVA.jyft.SF8T-TywhoSS) in a private browsing window
    * Use [archive.is](https://archive.is/https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/19/climate/the-weather-is-getting-wilder-and-some-see-a-dire-signal-in-the-data.html) to skip the paywall entirely, but sometimes [modifies archived pages](https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/02/wikipedia-bans-archive-today-after-site-executed-ddos-and-altered-web-captures/), and generally fails to archive complex multimedia content.
