Republicans instead plan to propose an eight-week bill to fund the entire department, including back pay for TSA workers

**TL;DR:** The Senate passed a bill overnight to fund most of DHS through the end of the fiscal year, covering everything except ICE and Border Patrol (TSA, Coast Guard, FEMA included). House GOP leaders immediately rejected it because it left out immigration enforcement funding. Speaker Johnson said the House will instead pursue an 8-week stopgap that funds all of DHS, including back pay for TSA workers.

Problem: senators have already left for a 2-week Easter recess, so nothing is getting resolved quickly. Meanwhile, TSA agents have been going unpaid since DHS funding lapsed on February 14th, causing widespread call-outs, long airport lines, and some workers quitting entirely. Trump separately said he’d sign an executive order directing DHS Secretary Mullin to pay TSA workers as an emergency measure.

The underlying fight: Democrats blocked ICE/Border Patrol funding after two U.S. citizens died in confrontations with immigration agents in Minnesota. Senate Republicans plan to try funding enforcement separately via budget reconciliation, which only requires a simple majority and cuts Democrats out of the process entirely.

  2. My prediction is that Trump is going to unilaterally appropriate funds from somewhere, no one is going to stop him (certainly not the courts), and this issue is basically going to end Congress’s power of the purse. Hope I’m wrong but I guess we’ll see.

  3. Truly stupid GOP believe they can convince voters that this is all the Democrats fault.

  4. Another week, another 40 day shutdown. It’s peak unserious government when they’d rather keep the DHS deadlock alive for campaign clips than actually pay the TSA and Border Patrol agents working for free.
We’re sitting here with 4 hour airport lines and zero stability while the House GOP tanks the only deal that actually had a shot in the Senate. It’s all performative chaos at this point, and the rest of us are just stuck paying for the drama with our own sanity. Same circus, different Tuesday.

They don’t care. Donald Trump told them not to give Democrats a win no matter what and this lines up perfectly with that order. They’re so scared of Trump they are wearing shoes that are two sizes too big. They’re eating his shit with a smile.

This is america, where the SS/gestapo get paid and the real workers (TSA) are made to work for free. Never forgive the voters who wanted this to happen, they wanted their pedo-in-chief back.

  8. One person’s opinion, but I think this is another case of Mike Johnson taking a bullet to keep Trump from having to take a position (sign it or veto it) on a popular bill that he doesn’t like.

GOP just got baited so hard lmao. They just took full ownership of the shutdown they never even wanted.

I shouldn’t credit the democrats too much here though. The GOP created this opportunity all on their own. They begged democrats to fund DHS and framed the entire thing as being harmful to TSA and therefore airport security.

Now the GOP is openly blackmailing TSA funding until their thugs get paid. Well played, stable geniuses.

  10. Good job House GOP. The Senate offered you a lifeline to not sink right before the Easter holiday and you threw it away. It’s honestly amazing how utterly incompetent and stupid the GOP is.

  11. Everybody knows that it gets much worse with every single hour that passes. The MAGAts are all such little-dick cowards that they won’t end this madness, and they are the only ones that can. Every hour that passes also makes the crash that much worse when it inevitably happens. They still don’t act. They would rather sit and get more and more nervous than admit they were wrong.

Republicans have been setting up the Democrats as the Save the Day Cavalry for the past 6 months now. It almost feels like they all WANT to give up their seats in the midterms. I’m OK with this.

“GOP has ruined your vacation by not passing an agreed upon bill by their Senate counterparts.”

Should be the headlines moving forward. GOP can fix this any time but refuse to do so.

So now they’ve made it clear it’s the GOPs fault haha. Mike Johnson and their ilk are actually stupid

  15. House GOP countered with a new appropriation of $100,000,000,000 for a new fugitive slave catching force.

So wait. This morning comments said the “Dems caved”! A few hours later, the GOP rejected the deal.

Maybe the Dems actually did something savvy to (further) demonstrate and communicate that the GOP is full of lunatics?

The overwhelming sentiment among the majority of white voters across all three elections: ‘The fact that you think we care is truly comical. The cages, the deportations, and the violence are what we voted for. So brace yourselves. Because there are three plus more years of the beatings, and we are just getting started.’

Among those who voted, the majority of white men and white women voted for a racist, fascist, sexist, war-mongering kid rapist and kid killer in 2016, 2020, and 2024. *It was never about the price of eggs or gas.*

  18. So that’s it for the foreseeable future, then?

If nothing passes today, Congress is cleared to go into recess, right?. That drags out this standoff to, what, another couple of weeks or so?
