By all accounts, Iran was committing to its end of the bargain under the JCPOA that Obama helped negotiate, and a deal that Trump abandoned out of spite.
This included strict limitations on uranium enrichment and centrifuges, Iran agreeing to sunset provisions and shipping 98% of its stockpile out of the country, the destruction of their Plutonium cores, placing all of their facilities and their uranium supply chain under rigorous monitoring, among other things.
Obama’s diplomacy intended to AVOID a war and box in Iran’s nuclear program.
US intelligence, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and even Trump administration officials at the time all indicated that Iran was holding up its end of the agreement.
Because Trump tore up this agreement, Iran’s nuclear program is now more advanced than it would have been if the JCPOA had remained in place!
Trump, the genius deal maker he is, failed repeatedly to negotiate a new nuclear deal.
During his first term, Trump did not approach negotiations in any earnest or competent matter.
Then the second time around, Trump again approached talks from a bad faith position. Nearly every analyst agrees it was doomed from the start.
But Trump still tried to conceal his failures and shift the responsibility on Obama and Iran, which provided him with a false pretext to go to war.
Instead of resorting to diplomacy, he bombed Iran TWICE in the middle of negotiations and then launched the US into another needless and unjustified war in the middle east.
And now after everything that’s unfolded, the US is back to square one.
Also, if Iran ever needed a practical reason to own and operate a nuclear weapon, Trump and Netanyahu just gave them one.
Reminder that Donald Trump went from insisting that Iran unconditionally surrender, to accepting a ceasefire proposal from Iran that included massive concessions from the US because he NEVER had a coherent strategy for a drawn out conflict.
Their demands include sanction relief, war reparations, at least $20 billion more in unfrozen assets, control over the Strait of Hormuz, and their ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs…
Also the ability to sell oil at free market rates without sanctions, to exact tolls on ships and tankers, and among other things, to continue funding its proxies and terrorists groups.
And let’s be clear, the Islamic Regime was in no position to make these demands before the war. After everything, Iran has only GAINED leverage in negotiations.
Trump also dismissed concerns before the war about Strait of Hormuz closures even though he was explicitly warned that Iran would resort to these countermeasures in the Gulf.
This led to global trade disruptions, market shocks and surging oil prices, and with each passing day, Trump was becoming more and more desperate.
Desperation that has turned into claims of “victory” even though the US has failed to accomplish much of anything, and Iran has more bargaining power now than it did prior to the war.
Meanwhile, Trump’s war has exacted a devastating toll on the American and world economy.
Trump’s war caused a global energy crisis unlike anything we’ve seen in recent memory.
Millions have been displaced from their homes, US troops are dead, thousands of innocent civilians have been killed—some of them CHILDREN.
War crimes have been committed and bombs have been dropped on schools, hospitals, heritage sites, non military infrastructure and massive energy facilities.
Trump’s war has triggered world wide chaos and has caused irrevocable damages to our alliances.
Conflict has been reignited between Israel and Hezbollah, and the Lebanese are now facing a crisis similar to Gaza.
Trump’s war has provided Russia with the budget revenues it needs to continue funding its aggressive military campaign in Ukraine for years to come.
China has also benefitted from this war and has made both short and long term strategic gains.
Worse yet, Trump’s war has hardened the Russia-China-Iran axis.
In the end, Trump only managed to yield leverage to Iran in matters of their sovereignty, their control over the Strait of Hormuz, and the fate of their nuclear weapons program.
In the meantime, the theocratic, repressive regime remains INTACT.
The IRGC is still a powerful authority in the Gulf region.
Iran still maintains its hold on nuclear materials and missile supplies.
The people of Iran have not been “liberated,” and they have become disenchanted with the idea that the US ever intended to do so.
All of this is to say that the US has failed to accomplish any of Trump’s constantly shifting “objectives,” and after everything, Iran is in a better position to negotiate and Trump could very well be forced to accept a WORSE deal than the one Obama negotiated through diplomacy, not WAR.
Mind you, Iran doesn’t have to enrich uranium right away. This war has demonstrated that they have so many other weapons and tools of leverage at their disposal.
Iran can also always easily rebuild its nuclear program or even bring it underground.
And with the funds that Iran will apparently receive from the US in exchange for its stockpile, it can rebuild its weapons systems and military, or even purchase Chinese weapons and military technologies.
This all could have been avoided if Trump didn’t rip up the previous agreement out of contempt for Obama.

Trump’s Truth Social posts are moving the oil market more than actual physics at this point. He’s claiming a “total victory” and saying Iran agreed to “never close it again,” but Tehran is clearly using the Strait as their only remaining leverage against the naval blockade. It’s a classic standoff: Trump won’t lift the blockade until the “transaction” is 100% done, and Iran won’t keep the water open if they can’t export their own oil. We are one itchy trigger finger away from $150 barrels

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was illusory it seems. No point trusting either the US or Israel going forward.
There’s so much “news” about the Hormuz situation, but so little information:
– As of the latest, IRGC has publicly announced that Hormuz will be “open” (1) with the permission of IRGC Navy, (2) for “commercial vessels”, (3) not military vessels, (4) on designated route.
– “Sources” say this does not include “enemy vessels”, or vessels carrying cargo for “enemy” (so US, Isreal)
– This “re-opening” will last for the 10 days of Isreal-Lebanon ceasefire, provided the ceasefire is upheld
>”With the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open,”
This is a direct quote from the article, which the article implies is a direct quote of Iran’s speaker of Parliament.
It DOES NOT SAY Hormuz is closed effective immediately. Given the current context, it likely means that “Hormuz will not remain open” i.e. it will be closed again after the 10 days, if US blockade continues, This also does not guarantee Hormuz will remain open if blockade stops, but Isreal continues to attack.
—
Also, it’s not exactly a “re-opened”, since vessels must still get IRGC Navy approval + transit on predetermined routes. A huge part of Hormuz still cannot be traversed for fear of mines. So we’re not back to pre-war traffic.
—
There’s a chance that US mine clearing operations has not happened, and is not currently happening. Military vessels are not allowed to “transit” Hormuz, although mine clearing is not exactly “transiting”. Mines seems to be placed further out of Iran to force ships to transit near Iran.
—
Please ignore everything that Trump said, and any news articles working off what Trump said. Any article that cites a non-Iranian source is unreliable. The ultimate source of truth is IRGC and Iran parliament.
Also, it seems like Iran is firm on their nuclear position, and on receiving war reparations, possibly by collecting revenue from strait (because we all know US wouldn’t pay). Could just be posturing. But also realize that what you’re hearing from Trump could also just be posturing.

If you’re a bit confused about all of the contradictory statements coming out of Washington and Tehran, the reality is that the situation is confused.
President Trump gave a swirl of statements yesterday to journalists and upbeat assessments about how the talks are going, saying that Iran had agreed not to enrich uranium, and Iran has agreed to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
All of his claims were then refuted by Iran’s parliamentary speaker, who said Trump had made “seven claims in one hour, all seven of which were false”.
But Iran’s statements also have not been so clear.
That first announcement by the foreign minister that the Strait of Hormuz was completely open was then clarified, with Tehran saying that the tankers and the vessels would have to take routes designated and controlled by Iran.
