Any of Trump’s followers at this point who consider themselves to be Catholic, *aren’t*.

The Roman Catholic Church has horrible issues, but this American Pope makes for such an amazing contrast to this American President.

I’m an ex-Catholic atheist with a lot of anger toward the Catholic Church. But, to their credit, they’ve been against the death penalty for a long time.

The Pope is correct – there is no reason for a death penalty in the US in 2026
Trump bringing back firing squads in yet another stupid decision.

Vatican City, the only non-Islamic theocracy in the world and the last absolute monarchy in Europe, officially abolished the death penalty 57 years ago in August 1969 under Pope Paul VI. The change was quietly published in the Vatican’s Latin Gazette and removed the provision that allowed for capital punishment for anyone attempting to assassinate the Pope.

It needs to be abolished, 100%. There’s no reason for it.

The Pope is a moral leader of the world.
Trump is the immoral leader of the world. The evidence is overwhelming. And to think that most Evangelicals still support/glorify their golden god Trump!

Remember that part of Arrested Development where they brought up how George built the prison he would later occupy?
Just thinking about that for no reason, today.

Reminder that genuine Catholic teaching isn’t “left” or “right.” Anyone who tries to use what the Pope says for a modern political agenda will inevitably be disappointed when he eventually says something that that doesn’t fit their program.

I think two things at the same time. One, the death penalty is barbaric and has no place in a democratic society, and people who oppose it except for people who “really deserve it” are no better than the other bloodthirsty types. And, two, if I were going to be executed I sure as shit would prefer a firing squad to the gas chamber, electric chair, or lethal injection. The horror of those methods is indescribable.
They are in no way about reducing the horror for the condemned, they’re all about protecting witnesses and jailers from being confronted with the reality of their actions.

Between the high end sunglasses the DHS are buying, warehouse detention centers and now government authorized firing squads for whatever they deem an appropriate crime, I can see why Pope might be a bit concerned…

I guess if you can start a war and execute someone then they are basically bith engaging in fire squad execution. When you think of it.

The number of evangelical Protestants I have seen go on TV or other media in the last week and say they “just can’t follow the Pope anymore” has Martin Luther spinning in his grave so fast they attached a turbine to him and all of Germany’s energy shortages have been solved.
