I was simultaneously forced to attend Catholic school and church on Fridays and Sundays, while my dad listened to “enlightened atheist/agnostic Conservative” radio stations.
Republicans by and large worship their own views on government and society more than they do any “god”.
Anyone care to think why the “church” is supposed to be unified, yet there are such strong ethnic and regional divisions across denominations?

Lapsed Catholic here I’ve always felt Francis and now Leo are just lipstick on a pig. During the Francis era the American clergy went to the clerical fascist right as Francis started going against right wing Catholicism. I’ve seen no evidence that anything has changed under Leo. The cynic and realist in me believes they only care about the immigration crackdown because the Latino Catholics are being hurt by it. I’d like to see excommunication of some of the worst American clergy to start taking the church seriously again till then it’s just a hard right wing lobbyist group to me with a nice figurehead

I believe that in the USA there is a rising pentecostal element that thinks they deserve the wealth they have and the poor deserve to be poor. How is that anything like what Jesus taught?

Listen, I hate the christofascists too, but Christianity is a 2000 year old ancient near eastern offshoot of Judaism. The writers of the texts were very much not 21st century progressives. They just thought a different group of people were going to hell. If you truly are progressive, why try to pick and choose parts of that text to salvage something that was never what you believe? If you want to make up a religion that meets your 21st century sensibilities, why not something cooler like the Jedi religion? At least you get some movies and video games to explore your faith.
