Twenty years. Both sides of government. Nothing will change. They planned it this way.

  3. Poor single people used to live in “rooming houses”, which were cheap. But they’ve been effectively outlawed by zoning and other laws.

Zoning laws also have strict minimum-size stipulations that ensure any new studio apartments must be large, and therefore expensive. A friend lived in a 100-year-old 16 square metre studio for a while. It was tiny, but adequate. A roof over their head.

The minimum size regulations are now double that size, meaning the cost is roughly double.

**We’ve effectively banned the construction of cheap housing**. The planning profession seems to think outlawing cheap/small homes means everybody will have “nice” homes, but the result is poor people have to deal with shitty share-houses, couchsurfing, and homelessness.
