There is a large protest but it may not be enough to vote against constitutional revision. The ruling party can push with 2/3 in each house with the majority of the public the last hurdle. But with increasing concerns about China, Russia, and North Korea, there is a gradual shift underway here.

The geopolitical landscape of the region has moved on and they’ve been left vulnerable. They can’t pretend China isn’t a factor for them now. They need to figure something out before things kick off.

No one likes war but if you remain a pacifist you put your people and country at risk of being taken over by an unfriendly neighbour.
In my opinion, with the direction the world is heading being a pacifist is asking for trouble.
It’s like leaving your door open and asking a thief not to steal from you.

Pacifist means they won’t attack, doesn’t mean they won’t defend… an island is very defendable

I like Takaichi as much as the next person, but sometimes you’ve to make decisions that will make some or even the majority upset.
Asia would do good if Japan is able to somewhat challenge China again, militarily and economically.
Its a very similar situation for Germany which after ww2 also turned pacifist for the most part leaving Russia completely unchallenged.
If there was at least some kind of will and anticipation, they could have supported Ukraine themselves without that Trump shit show.
Germans too are against the current plan of increasing military budget and military personnel, but again, sometimes you just have to accept that geopolitics have changed drastically in the last 4 years and it’s kind of embarrassing that it took so long for countries to react.

Most of the protestors in Japan are brainwashed weirdos.

When pacifists were getting their way there’s no need to protest. When they loose the argument and Japan rearms they organise their largest protest ever. That makes sense.
But are they more popular than ever or less popular than ever? The size of the protest tells us nothing at all.

Isn’t it completely natural thinking that Japanese people don’t want to die for defending Korea or Taiwan? In fact, Americans don’t want to die for them either.

Without going into the merits of the change, It doesn’t surprise me that Japan would be against change.

Pretty dope. Nice to see the youth don’t want the West interfering with Japan and forcing them to militarize again. The whole of the Pacific is grateful too

Liberal democracies around the world need to beef up or face the consequences down the road. I would also be suspicious of anyone saying Japan shouldn’t increase their military power because of their history, that’s an obvious tactic the Chinese have been pushing to reduce support for it.
