Medics were working on Monday to evacuate two people with symptoms of the deadly hantavirus after a suspected outbreak on a luxury cruise ship held off West Africa carrying mostly British, American and Spanish passengers, officials said.
Around 150 people were still stuck on the vessel after three people – a Dutch couple and a German national – died, and others fell ill, including a Briton who left the vessel earlier and was being treated in South Africa, authorities added.
“We’re not just headlines: we’re people with families, with lives, with people waiting for us at home,” Jake Rosmarin, a U.S. travel blogger, said in a tearful Instagram video post from the ship on Monday.
Stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean with Hanta virus on board. Literal nightmare.
You couldn’t PAY ME to get on a cruise. I hope they can contain the spread.

After getting people off, just burn the boat or sink it. That will kill the rats.

No offense to those on board, but none of us want another COVID situation, so those people need to stay on that boat indefinitely (if necessary). Let’s stop it before it becomes a bigger problem.

My wife and I have been writing with this company about a trip to antarctica on this exact boat. I guess it is a sign to go!

The key question here is there person to person transfer or exposure to infected rodents/their feces.

I feel bad for the doctors and nurses. I cant imagine working on a small cruise ship med bay and dealing with that level of acuity.

I wish they would say which island they were trying to get into since I am on one of the islands.

Hantavirus. Well that settles that, never cruise ships.

I’d like to see that data on cruise ships and their impact on the spread of illness and viruses around the world. I’m willing to bet it’s significant enough that we might eliminate cruises.

I know a few people who were on that ship recently.

you booked tickets on a cruise ship after we all saw ships turned away from ports during covid, after weve all lived through a pandemic, i struggle to find sympathy

Cruises are basically floating virus incubators. Yuck. If you are into travelling it’s much better to be more selective about where you want to go, and then just fly there.
