Paywalled article, but this is something that most Americans signed up for with decades of car-centric policies. Hopefully this pushed things towards transit oriented communities.
The narrative is that the US is more insulated than other countries from the energy shock. The reality is that Americans use so much energy that they will still ultimately pay more. For example, EU gas prices, on average, are 1.5x what is paid in the US. But EU residents, on average, use 0.25x the amount of gas than Americans. So EU residents might end up with less cost of living impacts.

Practically all US cities have bus systems, even if they are very limited. Poor planning if your job is not on the same route as your apartment.
Edit: A whole bunch of people seem to think they have an inherent right to live wherever they want and to work wherever they want. Facilitated by their cars that they can’t afford.

I bought a gas supper the first time gas got expensive 4 years ago. Whats your excuse?

Time to ride a bike, carpool or take the bus. I wish we had trains.

American here. My EV and bike are great. I’m hoping that my fellow Americans wake up an start paying lower prices.

Time to take control back and get an EV folks, embrace green energy and move forward. Can’t be held hostage by things out of your control.

Maybe people should get EVs that are way more efficient and cost less to drive. Maybe people should get small more efficient cars instead of trucks and SUVs.
Wonder what would happen if gas wasn’t so subsidized and cost $8! Wish we could find out.
Self inflicted, make better decisions.

Never have I been happier to have made public transit access a priority when buying a house. Saving up currently for roof solar and house battery backup.

I was already worrying about this affecting my job (and have even mentioned it to a supervisor). I live close to work, but a lot of my coworkers are commuting longer distances. If they can’t afford to work here, my workplace will be understaffed, and those of us that remain will probably get stuck working a lot of overtime.
So, paradoxically, I might make more money during an gas crisis, but my personal life might go to shit. Thanks Trump!
