As a permanent resident, this thought bubble from Angus Taylor has instantly made me consider applying for citizenship. Just so that I can cast my vote and put Liberal last on absolutely everything.
Sounds like they haven’t thought this through a whole lot. Fertility rates are already falling and taking paid parental leave away from PRs, people that are committed to building a life in this country and pay taxes, is just going to make the problem worse.

It is shortsighted. Actions like this make immigrants an exploitable underclass. If they know they can get fired and then be homeless, they will put up with any abuse and exploitation from dodgy employers.
And that helps drive down wages and rights for the rest of us.

Wow. What a way to ensure that every single permanent resident about to take citizenship before the next election never, ever votes for you!
I’ve gotta hand it to Angus; I didn’t know expect him to do such a thorough and swift job of applying the coup de grace to his party as a political force in Australia, but I’ve gotta hand it to him, he has outdone himself. Fantastic, great work, well done Angus.

So… we lack skilled workers but won’t support them setting themselves up? So, what they steal food? Can we rely on good ol corporations to pay for sponsorship?
Let’s be real, they want to repeal workers rights and an employment crisis is their key to doing that.

People have missed this:
>Mr Taylor’s policy would attach a 10-year residency requirement to the age pension and disability support pension, even for migrants who become citizens.
This is straight up a proposal for two-tier citizenship. Creating actual, honest to god second-class citizens who have less rights than other citizens; and only a fool would truly believe this would stop at the aged pension and NDIS. Or that the residency requirements would remain at 10 years indefinitely once the principle is established.

What about citizens who are married to a PR who has kids. These permanent residents could be living in the country for many years, have a life here, pay taxes and so on. If it wasn’t hard having a family already, you want to make it harder?
These guys have lost it.

What does Angus Taylor have against Kiwis?

I really am confused why these measures are controversial and I’m not a coalition supporter at all. If I moved to another country and even became a PR, I can’t imagine *expecting* free stuff when I’m not a citizen. You’ve moved there to try and change your life and if circumstances change where it’s turned against you then you move back home. I really don’t get why that’s controversial especially when we’re in a situation where we’re looking for ways to save on the budget.

So pay the same tax as everyone else, but have limited access to the services in which this tax pays for?
I’m sure this will land well. Nice job.

If they are paying tax, they should be allowed to access the same benefits as other tax payers.
But heaven forbid we do anything abiut tax dodgers.
