Or ministers can spend money on teams to do it properly and not expect the public to do their job.

And what will that achieve if law enforcement don’t have the resources to do anything about it?

Our local authority got a 3-month closure order on a shop selling counterfeit tobacco (and that was just what they could objectively pin on them, doubtless there’s more). They did a post explaining some of the issues which boiled down to really limited powers. The closure order didn’t even apply to the business, they could only issue an order forbidding anyone entering that shop unit for 3 months, but that business could just go trade in another unit. And that order took them ages to get as they first had to issue several warnings etc.

They know exactly what shops are dodgy, they don’t need our help, but their hands are tied.

Will be pointless. Reported a shop for selling fake rolling papers to trading standards last year (they literally have a qr code you can scan to prove they’re authentic – which was fake). Heard nothing back lol

They are pretty easy to spot, they have Barber Shop written on them

    They all take cash only

  6. how about we actually get the resources in to properly investigate places suspected of being dodgy, rather than spreading this weird paranoia and getting the people to do their jobs for them.

stuff like this is how you get people like that nutter a while back who attacked a barber shop worker with an axe because they “knew it was a dodgy place”. we can suspect all we like but we aren’t the ones who can prove or take action against these places, this is an issue higher up.

They’re going to get so many reports that genuine cases will be lost in the noise with only 75 officers or whatever it was to comb through them. Just giving people the illusion of being listened to.

  8. I’m no grass, but there’s at least 15-20 vape/barber shops on my high street alone! They’re everywhere. They shouldn’t need members of the public to point that out.

  9. People see them and presume they’re dodgy. And sure, maybe they are but at this point it’s a guess.

Some people come across as dodgy while being perfectly legit.

  10. I live in Nottingham. In the past 5 years about 5-6 barbershops have opened up in the centre, most of which are permanently empty. Outside of the centre I know of another handful which are also regularly empty.

Cash only. Expensive car sat out front.

I ain’t doing their job for them. I enjoy my 50g Amber Leaf for £10 thank you. You find me!

Bro I called the police when a wanted rapist who I’d seen on crimestoppers was stealing a bike in the centre of town. They could not have given fewer shits.

  13. You leave my barber alone, I don’t care if he’s shady, he does a good job.

A Barber shop on the outskirts of town was open at midnight on Xmas day by me . Who gets their hair cut at them days and time ?

Put more police on the streets? Police walking around will notice more.

Thr owners have British passports and often are reforms idea of British. Where are you deporting them to genius? Nottingham?

This is 100% going to lead to constant false reports of businesses owned by BAME people.

Reform can’t even keep a tidy house …. bribes, bungles and russian money

  19. My turkish barber gives me a good trim and a complementary coffee every time I go in. If they’re laundering money it aint my business.

  20. Downtown_Many8020 on

My local shop is streaming via IPTV football on a big screen and other sports all day long on an illegal stream, so its not exactly difficult to use that as an excuse to snoop around.

  21. If I call the police and say, “i think this vape shop and that mini market are fronts” then I could run the risk of wasting police time. I have absolutely zero tangible evidence, how would i?

They are both almost always empty other than the shop keeper and his mate, and I think it’s pretty obvious what’s going on, but all that means is that it’s obvious enough that the police should work with HMRC to get on top of it

  22. Yes they usually sell vapes, don’t need to public to tell you that, police can find them by,.shock horror, patrolling the streets

The councils as well, seem to be allowing these shops to open?

  23. Ill-Sell8157 on

Really, is the state of British policing that bad, short of replacing their shiny signs with money laundering operations centre how much more help do the police need

  24. How would they? I don’t know about you lot, but I’ve used the same barbers for the best part of 20 years. Why would I know which ones are dodgy when I’ve only ever used the one?

Dig deep fellas, pay someone, sounds like a job someone could do, you know.. we’re kinda short on those right now.

I’m sure the literal 27 barber shops in a 1 mile radius from where I live is not a giveaway.

Police and government are so fucking slow. They need to employ people who have criminal backgrounds. Cause they do not know how to think or act.

The barbers and scrap men are just the money men.

Some wash Money in the bookies, they may lose a bit, but all winnings are legit tax free.

One of the fag shops near me, is 100% into people smuggling. I’ve met a few of the new lads. They have no passport, and paid to work in the shops… When I say paid, they get free lodgings and about 60 quid a week. Plus all the free fags and vapes they need.

Now here is the rub, the police station is over the road from my house.

The police officers use to buy the dodgy vapes… Not bullshit. I know this comes across as a trust me bro, but it’s not.

We also have 2 very prominent crack dealers, in a block of flats… Again over the Rd, next to the police station. Crackheads are everywhere at certain times, chemist free hit time. Then shop lifting goes mad around the area.

The police could quite easily deal with all of this, they could literally put cameras on the building and just watch the local activities…. Make arrests.

I’ve seen all sorts since moving here, but the incompetence is a next level. Both council and police.

  26. Ahh yes. The country is struggling financially and constantly trying to grow our business economy, so let’s attack the only shops that are left on our dead high streets! Great idea.

Edit: But also let’s ignore the majority of trades that like to do cash in hand jobs so they can avoid paying tax. Because that’s the British way.
