The opposition leader has been asked whether the Coalition will look to the Greens or crossbench to set up a longer inquiry into the government's capital gains tax and negative gearing changes.

Labor needs the support of the Greens to pass the tax changes through parliament.

Angus Taylor says the Coalition will work with "anyone" to "kill off" the government's tax changes.

We'll work with whoever we have to. We're going to fight them every single day. Because this is the wrong thing for our small businesses," Taylor says.

There is a very real chance that the Coalition and Greens will come to a joint agreement in coming days to oppose the tax reforms.

The Greens have always been the party of obstructionism and giving free ammunition to One Nation and the Coalition. The Greens are the right’s biggest and best performing asset.

I’m sick of these blockades happening all the fucking time when it comes to transformative progressive Labor policy and I think the government is sick of it too.

Well done Angus. What if you forcing the ALP to work with the greens ends up in the ALP having to go further, in order to appease the greens?

It is completely fair that the Greens oppose the grandfathering, but **if** they vote with the Coalition, then they are proving that they are just contrarians and will let good be the enemy of perfect.

That being said Labor should be willing to negotiate with the Greens in good faith so long as that is reciprocated.

To Greens voters, what do you want the Greens to do? They want the grandfathering part taken out, now its worth noting Labor are getting a hammering from all angles by these changes even with grandfathering provisions . Do the Greens need to take in the consideration that a public sentiment swing too far will lead to a right wing government at the next election who will reverse all changes anyway?

I vote greens and preference Labor. I used to vote democrats too, before they made a deal with the coalition which basically destroyed that party.

If the greens block this historic budget by siding with the coalition I don’t think I’ll be voting for them again

  6. Isn’t this just the Coalition saying they’ll work with anyone and that therefore includes the Greens… Like in pretty sure Labor would work with anyone to get these changes passed so that also includes the Greens…

  7. Regarding grandfathering. Banks are currently re-evaluating borrowing limits for investors with no future NG in mind. This is reducing borrowing limits by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If the changes aren’t grandfathered could we see banks calling in thousands of loans where the clients borrowing power is now well below their equity? E.g A bank thinks a client can afford 500k without negative gearing and that client obtained 700k finance for an IP two months ago with NG factored in.

Even without banks calling in loans, could we not see a mass sell off of IP from those who purchased in the last 5 years?

If the greens work with the liberals over Labor then they’re basically controlled opposition

Gonna be fun this. LNP wanna essentially fuck them off. Greens will wanna strengthen them re grandfathering, and they both might agree on fucking them off outta shares etc…

Turkish Rug Sale in Canberra everyone.

  10. The last time the Liberals did this in this term of government, we got a more progressive version of the environment laws out of it.

Fingers crossed the Greens can do it again. I’m not sure Larissa Waters can stop the Greens flat lining in the polls but I have confidence in her ability to negotiate.
