“The Scottish Greens have said that no candidates were blocked due to their visa status.” Whyever not??

Still can’t believe that the Scot Gov gave people with limited leave to remain the right to stand as elected officials.
Mental.

Even as a Green voter in the local elections and that it is legally allowed, being able to stand with a student visa is crazy.

Is it really so controversial to require that we be governed by British citizens. When did the British people agree that this could happen?

Perhaps I’ll be going against the grain here, but I don’t think being an ~~immigrant~~ temporary resident shouldn’t exclude you from running for positions with the goal of bettering your community.
I mean you don’t need to look far to see being a born and bred native doesn’t guarantee benevolence either.

I genuinely cannot comprehend the level of hubris required to lead someone who is on a temporary visa to believe that they should run as a candidate in a government election.

If they let other candidates run with a student visa then yeah this is unfair.

It’s really funny seeing people attack young adults standing for elections, and attacking Scottish democracy.
Young people in the UK habitually get the short end of the stick and the entire country is run for the benefit of boomers.
And Scotland has voted for the SNP for over 10 years in a row, who altered the law to let candidates on visas run, so it seems a lot of people just can’t respect democratic choices there. I wonder why!

And so she should. Arrogance personified. Repeal Scotland (Franchise & Representation) Act 2021.

Imagine a Russian or Chinese agent on Student Visa get elected to further their agenda. No one without residency should be allowed to contest an election.
UK is still living in colonial mindset by freely allowing commonwealth citizen to vote irrespective of their visa status.
