I should ask my employer to “gift” my salary instead of paying it as PAYE.

Is tax really the issue?
Whether he pays tax on it or not, I would say it’s the fact he received it and for what reason is the real issue here.

I don’t think tax is why this is considered problematic.

Gifting £5m to politician who potentially, and unfortunately, might be the next PM is significantly concerning for lobbying purposes. Also what about AML issues ?

The issue is who gave it to him and when, on top of all the lies about its purpose.

Hadn’t even thought about the tax implications tbf, was more concerned about the who/what/when/where/why and why Farage has given different answers, accounts which don’t match his answers and why he then ducked all media interviews in the last few days. The guy who says “he can’t be bought” and markets himself as a straight talker.

Remember you could earn £500 /£1000 in interest and you have to pay tax! 😂

Angela Rayner got absolutely raked over the coals by the press and public over her stamp duty. Rightfully so as tax avoidance in public office is disgusting and far too widespread. Farage seems to be able to deny, lie and then change his story every other week and press will eat it up. Honestly getting a 5m gift for campaigning for brexit is shady enough, but to not declare it and not pay tax on it is fucking vile.

I wonder if I got £5m from a crypto dude who wants to pay his way into a new gov, whether I’d have to pay tax…

Tax isn’t the issue. Not declaring it then lying about the usage is the issue.
The media needs to stop defending this and start call him the lying shithouse that he is.

If tax isn’t due then that shows just how screwed up our tax system is when it comes to overly burdening normal people while pandering to the wealthy. Goes to show that all the times I’ve stated that it’s not the welfare system that’s the problem and had people arguing that it’s “politics of envy” and “wealthy people already pay taxes” is bs.

The fact that people like this have somehow convinced so many people that dirt poor immigrants are the problem is genuinely mind blowing.

Anyone else noticed the usual Reform pushing accounts don’t post a single comment on these threads related to the bribe?
It’s hilarious.
Shows they have no answer and are hiding and ducking questions.

If a foreign national “gifts” me say £50,000 to push their agenda or cause decent in UK politics wouldn’t that make me a form of terrorist?

Is there not a Money Laundering issue if the money was used to buy Homes in cash? He conveniently said the money wasn’t used to buy Homes… as if there might be an angle there. But he bought 2 homes with cash after the 5mill, so has he actually provided proof its a legitimate gift?
Not saying the Money is Laundered. But it came from a Crypto “Businessman” and normally when you make large purchases with cash you have to prove where it came from?

Catch 22
It isn’t a gift
it is either a bribe or a consideration in exchange for services rendered or due to be rendered

I remember back when dodgy Dave and his first few years in government, a panorama type programme were doing a thing on the Tory financing and pointed out that you could buy dinner with Cameron and Osborne for £50k. They rightly pointed out that you’re not spending £50k for dinner with the PM and asking for nothing in return. In the same vein you’re not spending £5m and wanting nothing in return.
Additionally there was a programme ran in NZ about NZ politicians and the lobbyists came up. Part of it was interviewing an actual lobbyist (fair play to the guy for going on) who sat there and dead pan to the camera claimed that the average citizen has just as much sway and influence over policy as they do.

This is a straw man argument and a deliberate attempt at misdirection.
Nobody is questioning his tax in this particular instance.
They are questioning the fact that he took a £5million payment from someone he lobbied on behalf of, thus displaying a level of corruption that wouldn’t be seen as acceptable in any of the other political parties.

Regarding the possiblity of **Quid pro quo.**
>There is, however, no evidence that we are aware of that any service was rendered by Mr Farage to Mr Harborne in return for the £5m.
Except the sudden policy change reducing tax on crypto.
The “no evidence” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. There won’t be a receipt proving that the policy change happened because of the gift. In the absence of evidence we are expected to assume a sort of innocent until proven guilty – assume they are entirely unrelated.
