# Early life

Itamar Ben-Gvir was born in [Mevaseret Zion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mevaseret_Zion) as the younger of two sons. His father, Zadok Ben-Gvir, was born in [Jerusalem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem) to parents from [Iraqi Kurdistan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_Kurdistan), and worked at a gasoline company and dabbled in writing. His mother, Shoshana Ben-Gvir, was a [Kurdish Jewish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Kurdistan) immigrant from Iraq who was active in the [Irgun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irgun) as a teenager. Ben-Gvir continued to be associated with the [Kahanist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kahanism) movement;[^([11])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itamar_Ben-Gvir#cite_note-11) [Otzma Yehudit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otzma_Yehudit) is considered Kach’s ideological successor.[^([12])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itamar_Ben-Gvir#cite_note-12)However, when forming the Otzma Yehudit party, he claimed that it would not be a Kach, Kahane Chai or splinter group.[^([13])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itamar_Ben-Gvir#cite_note-:1-13) He carried out a series of [far-right](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right_politics_in_Israel) activities that have resulted in dozens of indictments. In the 1990s, he was active in protests against the [Oslo Accords](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oslo_Accords). In 1995, Ben-Gvir came to public attention for the first time, when he appeared on television brandishing a Cadillac [hood ornament](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood_ornament) that had been stolen from Prime Minister [Yitzhak Rabin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yitzhak_Rabin)’s car, and declared: “We got to his car, and we’ll get to him too.” Several weeks later, Rabin was [assassinated](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Yitzhak_Rabin) by right-wing extremist [Yigal Amir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yigal_Amir).
