Rob Smith, the party’s president, has declared the party will stay neutral on October’s referendum, given the sharp disagreement within the UCP membership. That puts the governing party at odds with the stated position of the premier, her cabinet and her caucus, which advocate for the “remain” option.”
DAFUQ IS THIS!?!?!?
NEUTRAL?
How the hell can the governing party be “neutral” on this question?

This guy is president of a UCP constituency association, that just happens to have spent $300,000 under “other expenses” in the period 2024-2025. No other UCP constituency has that pattern. Something stinks.

Really dislike Markusoff as a reporter, he of the [Danielle Smith is bucking right-wing trends on LGBTQ issues](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/analysis-danielle-smith-alberta-trans-lgbtq-rightwing-1.6913153) infamy, and as usual he (or at least the headline writer) is getting the story wrong. The separatists are not organizing a campaign to challenge Smith’s leadership which Sylvestre basically admits before rambling about a scheme to force a UCP convention to force cabinet to rewrite the referendum question. Sylvestre and Rath, are not serious people, do not actually command the separatist forces in the Province and this has been obvious for a while now.

The tried and true tradition of Alberta conservative parties turning on their leaders for not being conservative enough continues. Unfortunately, the definition of “conservative enough” has shifted from solid blue Tory to outright Alberta separatism.
It’s a shame things have gotten this bad. Some people might point to Trudeau-era policies for alienating Albertans, or to Danielle Smith for courting separatist sentiment. But that doesn’t explain why so many Albertans have become receptive to separatism over the last few years.
I have to say, after speaking to several separatists, it’s pretty clear many of them are not getting accurate information and are instead stuck in an echo chamber. That was reinforced by a recent Toronto Star article on separatist leaders and events, which found that some either don’t know or don’t care about the facts, and are perfectly happy spreading conspiracy theories, misleading memes, and fake quotes across Facebook.
I genuinely don’t know how you fix something like that.

Well that’s what happens when you straddle both positions, it blows up in your face.
The fact, her or her inner circle didn’t realize this was going to happen has got to be a massive indictment of the capabilities of this government. But then again, this is the same government with Rob Anderson as a leading role within the Premier’s Office so frankly expected.

This is the problem with trying to placate the crazy wing of your political party, whatever it might be. They’re never going to be satisfied with half measures, and the measures they want are *crazy* and will never get the consent of the broader population.
Hopefully they can implode the party and force a new election before this actually gets to a ballot question, but I’m not confident.

All these years of UCP nonsense because Jason Kenney was power-hungry and thought he’d be able to get away with keeping a lid on the nuts like Harper mostly did.
Problem is that Harper, despite his many faults, had much better sense of the Canadian political landscape than Kenney had of the Albertan poltical landscape.
