About 20% of brits live in poverty and I don’t imagine they would be going on summer holiday.

For me this year more than anything I’ve been frustrated at seeing how high hotel and accom costs are basically right across Europe – it’s still fairly easy to find a cheap flight if you’re flexible, but then you’re faced with £180+ p/n for any sort of mediocre hotel in tonnes of cities. Inflation and overtourism have really done a number on lots of places.

What a useless article.
1) This was happening across most of the West even before the Iran debacle, everyone is feeling squeezed as economic growth has largely plateaued in many sectors. It’s not a problem unique to Britain.
2) This is a terribly misleading headline. It clearly attempts to tie inability to afford a summer holiday to broader living costs, but then even in the actual article itself clarifies the true cause is heavily weighted towards one specific good/event – oil prices due to the Iran War. That would have been a much more accurate headline.
3) The article doesn’t mention how this compares to YoY trends. I’d imagine this isn’t a huge change YoY when compared to the poverty rate.
Just a poor article, clearly written for no reason other than to incite a response / get clicks from people who don’t end up reading beyond the headline.

I mean, that was my life for about 17years but glad to know the silent poverty a huge number of us have spent the last couple of decades living in is now becoming felt by more and more people

I wonder where they get the numbers. I know quite a few people who have not been anywhere in 5 years. They go out alot but not on holiday.

The only way I could afford to do this was: living in a council flat, paying it off monthly through jet2, saving every penny and not going out every week, and meal prepping. This was me living alone on 25k. I could not afford a holiday if I was private renting.

These sorts of statements are so daft because no-one ever defines what they mean by “afford”.
In my experience, the average person thinks that they can afford a new car on a monthly payment but can’t afford to buy something second hand for 5k, because they run their lives on a cash flow basis and don’t look more than a couple of months down the line.
1 in 5 people are on benefits of some kind, if you’re skint and going on summer holidays beyond a camp site near the beach or something then you’re just doing yourself over.

Only ever been on lads holidays and they cost a fortune. Always seems 20 euros was leaving my pocket every 30 minutes.
Thankfully I got a dog and now use him as an excuse not to go.

City breaks somewhere in Europe where locals probably hate or just about tolerate me was an idea before I had a car, now id rather just take day trips in the UK. So much seriously underrated stuff everywhere you go here.
