Would rather wait out this president than be involved in his awful international diplomacy
A temporary slow period while our friend has a mental breakdown is better than a permanent stain on our brand 🤷♂️

We absolutely should not be tied to their trade policy, if you can call the entirely unhinged ‘Truths’ coming out of the White House as a policy.
No thanks.

On paper, a North American trade bloc would by easily the most powerful economic force on earth, and is ultimately what the 3 countries were slowly heading towards
In practice, this will obviously just be a way to exert US control, and the downsides to that clearly outstrip the upsides

I feel like anything lending legitimacy to the current regime is a mistake. Continue to diversify while pretending we’re interested.

The US wants us to terrif Canadians the same way they terrif their own citizens, which was deemed illegal by their own courts and are giving refunds out for now?
Do I have that right? Morons.

They basically want us to be a mining colony.
We provide them with the commodities they need but they don’t want us having a manufacturing sector.
That isn’t really a path we want to go down.

Canada MIGHT want to consider something like this deal if it involved zero tariffs and true free trade, but that’s not what the US is proposing, just low tariffs.
Plus, any deal you reach with the Trump administration isn’t worth then paper it’s written on. Who’s to say Trump wouldn’t slap high tariffs back on steel and aluminum because we’re too “woke” or some nonsense!?!?

Is a speech/interview Mr. Greer gave at Davos, he implied the ultimate goal USA is aiming for is a North American custom union arrangement.

Us trade policy is too unstable to parallel. We would have to change rules week by week, good luck having any other trade partners.

For decades, we completely exposed ourselves to the United States in exchange for quick and easy money, now they’re suggesting we double down on a strategy that has failed.
We either chart a path for ourselves or we might as well surrender now.

TARIFFS ARE A TAX ON YOUR OWN PEOPLE.
Trump and MAGA don’t understand this but we need to be super clear about this.
If we put a tariff on external parties we are taxing OURSELVES.
Europe or other parties don’t pay a cent and so they don’t care at all if we add a tariff.

Even as a socialist I have a lot of time for Carney right now.
If my government did this I would devote my life to making sure the LPC were never elected again. They better reject it out of hand. But the business community is so powerful and all they want is alignment with the U.S.

They don’t really have much to offer and the risk of them blowing up any deal at the last mins is almost a certainty

You cannot live within the lie of “mutual benefit through integration” when integration becomes the source of your subordination. – Mark Carney
This proposal would integrate us closer and sounds antithetical to the above messaging at Davos. It is leverage they will use to beat us over the head with on other trade deals or anything else they deem undesirable.
